This technology is a series of small molecules that enhance antibiotic effectiveness in treating bacterial infections. These compounds not only sensitizes resistant bacteria to enable more effective treatment, but also act as an antibiotic adjuvant to allow lower antibiotic doses to be used. The lead compound has been shown to sensitize both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria by up to 30-fold compared to traditional antibiotics. Efficacy has been demonstrated in ex vivo skin burn infection model and in vivo murine systemic infection models.
In the United States, over 2.8 million individuals contract antibiotic-resistant infections annually, resulting in more than 35,000 fatalities. Antibiotic resistance can lead to severe illness or death. It also contributes to extended hospitalizations, additional doctor visits, and higher treatment costs. Therefore, there is an urgent need for molecules that can enhance antibiotic efficacy.
