Low Energy Photosensitizers with Improved Safety and Efficacy for Dermatological Conditions

This technology is a group of novel photosensitizers used in photodynamic therapy to treat cancer, dermatological conditions, and other cell growth disorders, including elective cosmetic treatments. Photosensitizers are a critical component of photodynamic therapy as they produce a reactive form of oxygen when exposed to a specific wavelength of light. The reactive oxygen targets and kills nearby cells by oxidatively cleaving the DNA. The photosensitizers are quinoline-containing carbocyanine dyes that can be injected into the affected area and then activated with near-infrared (NIR) light at greater than 800nm. This technology is safer for the patient and operator compared to photosensitizers activated by ultraviolet light and enables deeper penetration and treatment of larger, localized tumors with minimal damage to surrounding cells.
